Speaking at Lisburn’s Quaker School celebrating ‘250 Years of Friends.’

Mr Stephen Moore, Principal of Friends’ School, introduced Kelvin to the 6th form as part of their 250-year celebrations. Earlier he said the school was, “founded in 1774 for the children of Quakers, ‘Friends’ has grown from a small school for 30 boys and girls to the school it is today, serving 1200 pupils aged 4-18 from right across the community. Although much has changed over the last 250 years, the school still stands on its original site on Prospect Hill and its Quaker values and heritage remain central to its ethos. This anniversary year is an opportunity to look back at the history of Friends’ and to reflect on how it has been shaped by events in Lisburn and further afield.”

Intro: Old man doing a wheelie…..

I was a pupil here 1967-74
Active in Sport and average in studies.
Teachers and peers encouraged me to keep the faith in God that I professed as a young boy of 10 years old.
Supporting others and going the extra mile makes a huge difference in other’s lives.
Christian teacher Barbara Burgess made a huge impression on me, how she recovered from being badly maimed in an IRA explosion and then returning to work, no-nonsense, no fuss - a Christlikeness that spoke volumes to me.

Five years later when I had my own trauma, that example stood out like a beacon helping me to endure, strive for recovery and keep the faith.

Jesus said in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.
In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
