Day 7 - ‘in-a-minute’
Bore da, today (Wednesday) is St David’s Day and the Welsh among us may be wearing a daffodil in their lapels.
Last week was one of those weeks when I had too much going on and rather than looking forward to the things I had on, I was looking forward to them ‘being over.’
It’s not a good way of serving our Lord, it’s a recipe for burnout and I feel like this morning I need to pause with the hymn writer John Greenleaf Whittier who penned, ‘Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all my strivings cease.’ The hymn is, of course,
‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.’ Perhaps it’s a good way for you to start your day as well.
May God Bless you richly today

Dear Lord and Father….
Dear Lord and father of Mankind,
Forgive our foolish ways!
Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives thy service find,
In deeper reverence praise.
Drop thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess,
The beauty of thy peace.
Breathe thro’ the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak thro’ the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of calm!
John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an Quaker poet, hymn writer and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the USA.
St David’s day prayer: Almighty God, you called your servant David, Bishop of Menevia, Wales, to be a faithful and wise steward of your mysteries for the people of Wales: Mercifully grant that, following his purity of life and zeal for the gospel of Christ, we may with him receive our heavenly reward; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
